What is women’s health?

Women’s health involves caring for adult women seeking preventive services or treatment for a specific health concern.

Services include everything from pap smears and oral birth control prescriptions to the treatment of vaginal infections. Maniya Health also offers well-woman exams. Physicians recommend these exams annually once you turn 21 or are sexually active.

The team at Maniya Health aren’t gynecologists or obstetricians (physicians who deal with pregnancy), and they don’t offer abortions. Rather, our Family Medicine physicians are skilled at performing pap smears, treating vaginitis and menopause symptoms.

What women’s health services do you offer?

Maniya Health offers several services, including:

  • Well-woman annual exams
  • Pap smears
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) treatment
  • Vaginal infections diagnosis and treatment (vaginitis or yeast infections)
  • Menopause symptom management
  • Oral birth control prescriptions
  • STI/STD testing

If your provider diagnoses you with a gynecologic abnormality, or if you are pregnant, your physician will recommend referring you to an OB/GYN for specialized treatment.

What happens during a women’s health exam?

Your Maniya Health provider takes your vitals and asks about your overall health and your family's medical history. Then, they conduct three main exams.

Breast exam

Your provider has you sit on the exam table and place your arm behind your head. With a gloved hand, they create circular motions around your breasts. They feel for any abnormalities or signs of breast cancer.

Your provider educates you on how to do this at home.

Pelvic exam

In private, you change into a paper robe and lie on your back on the exam table. Then, your provider with the aide of a chaperone has you place your feet in stirrups that rest at the end of the table.

They insert a lubricated small speculum into your vagina. You shouldn’t feel any pain — just a slight cold sensation and pressure. Your provider then checks the vagina, uterus, vulva, and cervix for any noticeable signs of STIs, cysts, or cancer.

Pap smear

During a pap smear, your provider inserts a small swab into the vagina to collect cells in your cervix. Then, they send them to a lab that tests them for cancer. The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends all women receive a screening  pap smear every 3-5 years as a preventive measure between the ages of 21 and 65 years old.
